Game Play

Like other Smash Bros. games, Brawl offers a battle system unlike other, more typical, fighting games. Up to four players can participate in a Smash session but the objective is not to kill your opponent. More Sumo than Ultimate Fighter, the characters in Smash Bros. fight to push each other out of the ring instead of bash each other’s brains out.

Because of this different game play, the characters do not have a health bar. Instead, these battles employ the use of percentages in order to reflect the level of damage they have obtained. This Damage Meter starts at zero percent, and can increase up to 999% As the percent of damage increases, the battling characters have less staying power and can be thrown further to the edge of the board. When a character is knocked out of the ring the player looses either a life or a point (depending on the mode of play).
